New
New Year, New thinking?
New plan?
Is new better than old?
Is there anything new under the sun?
If you want to get the same results, keep doing what you have always done.
When we get here… After all the chocolate and tinsel, we want so much to have something fresh…to have
something be different.
After all the presents and pies….after all the family chats and holiday movies….we want something unfamiliar, untried, NEW. When I think about my business and my relationships with clients, I think about all the things that made a difference and all the things that didn’t.
Sometimes I find something what works and then I keep doing it over and over again. And… There are days it starts to get stale and doesn’t work anymore.
New Year screams new plan. I think you have to keep some of the old ways but you need to sprinkle in the new. We all used to listen to records…Then we bought CD’s… Now artists are on streaming services. You have to be or nobody can hear you. When was the last time you went into a record store ? We all want the comfort of familiarity… but it breeds contempt… Remember? (One day I will stop using the …’s)
My new plan for this new year is to try new things… Twist the old… Try things a different way…not be afraid of change. If there is a new contractor to try…bring her on! If there is a new administrator to try out, bring him on. I love the feature sheets I have created for properties… But why don’t I try a new version? Different… Maybe less paper… More online. QR codes!!! I say yes. No holiday cards to my clients this year. Why don’t I call them all instead and say… Happy Holidays… What are you doing? Can I come over for a coffee? (Maybe I will get some free coffee… Mmmm… I love coffee.)
I might try open houses in a different way…with a twist. I might try once a week to eat something I have never tried before. And that will be hard because I am 58…and I love food… I have tried a lot of things. I am going to try and react differently to people when I am upset with them or disagree. I used to hold it in and acquiesce. (That’s a 10$ word… Acquiesce.)
This year I am going to be calm and honestly say if I don’t agree or I have been offended by something. The anger in conflict for me only comes with the hiding of the true emotion. I learned that in therapy. Angry is usually sad or hurt or disappointed bottled up.
These are my new things. We will all have different new things. Let’s try them on like wild new outfits. I started learning piano last year. My delightful teacher Treasa teaches me so many new perspectives and new ways to think about music and chords (voicings). She even suggested “Pie Christmas” where everyone brings a pie… And we did it… And it was yummy and we loved it.
New day.
New thinking.
New ideas about selling your house.
New ways to make sure my buyer is the one that gets the house in the middle of a bidding war.
New attitude.
New kindness to myself when something doesn’t work.
Aren’t we all just muddling along in a funny tumble of legs and arms and talking and numbers? Come with me this year and try some new. Drink deeply in the sweet elixir of newness. (Elixir… 20$ word for sure)
Trying new ways.
It is tasty… And kind of blueberry mixed with clotted cream and warm brown sugar butter.
